Two Aussie bars featured in the World’s 50 Best Bars of 2022

Each year, the prestigious World’s 50 Best Bars award recognizes 100 bars from around the world that elevate the drinking experience in their cities. The list comes in two parts: the 100-51 ranking dropped last week, naming Sydney’s Re at 87th and Melbourne’s pint-sized Caretaker’s Cottage at 60th.

Today, after an awards ceremony in Barcelona overnight, we can celebrate two more Aussie bars making the 50-1 list. Sydney’s 1950s-inspired cocktail bar Maybe Sammy takes the region’s highest ranking at number 29, naming it Australia’s best bar for the fourth year in a row. Sydney’s little mezcal bar Cantina Ok! came in at the age of 41.

This is a slight slip in the 2021 rankings; Last year Sammy turned 22 and Cantina Ok! came in at the age of 23, but the hospo legends behind the best bars in the country are still excited.

Commenting on Instagram, Maybe Sammy’s co-owners Stefano Catino and Vince Lombardo and creative director Martin Hudak said: “When we opened Maybe Sammy, we never dreamed we’d be one of the top 50 bars in the world four years in a row. The single best bar in Australia every time.

“We’re very grateful to the bar and our team continues to be recognized for their brilliant work… And a special mention goes to our friends from Australia who made the Top 100 list – we’re proud to be in such good company.”

This year’s top prize went to Barcelona Paradiso. The judges said the World’s Best Bar 2022 is a place where “surprises keep coming, from the show-stopping Supercool Martini, which uses a ‘super-chilled’ gin mix to build an iceberg, to the ultimate accolade: ” Drinks don’t look or taste like this anywhere else at Paradiso .

The judging panel, made up of experts from around the world, commented that Maybe Sammy’s high position for the fourth consecutive year was due to its “top flights and innovative cocktails”. They said: “The bar stays true to the vision of co-owners Stefano Catino and Vince Lombardo: a cocktail bar with the tradition and style of old European hotel bars and their hospitality, but updated with the raucous dazzle of Little Rat Pack-infused Las Vegas and bringing Under Under’s Italian-Australian with reverence.

Cantina Ok! commented with a simple “thank you” on his Instagram account this morning. According to the World’s 50 Best Bars judges, it was “the opening of a bar Sydney didn’t know it needed” when it opened three years ago.
